Alkrington Garden Village, more commonly known as Alkrington,[1] is a suburb of Middleton, in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England.[2]
Historically a part of Lancashire, during the Middle Ages, Alkrington was a township in the parish of Prestwich-cum-Oldham, and hundred of Salford.[2][3] Once rolling farmland, it was in 1886 when Alkrington was added to the Municipal Borough of Middleton,[2] and developed into a premium residential area.[1]
Alkrington is the site of Alkrington Hall and its accompanying woodland.[1] Some 125 acres (50 ha) of the woodland is a designated Local Nature Reserve. [4]
The collector Sir Ashton Lever was born at Alkrington Hall. The comedian Steve Coogan was born and raised in Alkrington,[5] and another comedian called Bernard Manning lived in the area for more than 20 years.[6]
The footballer Ashley Ward was born and raised in Alkrington.
