Historically a part of Lancashire, during the Middle Ages, Alkrington was a township in the parish of Prestwich-cum-Oldham, and hundred of Salford.[2][3] Once rolling farmland, it was in 1886 when Alkrington was added to the Municipal Borough of Middleton,[2] and developed into a premium residential area.[1]

Alkrington is the site of Alkrington Hall and its accompanying woodland.[1] Some 125 acres (50 ha) of the woodland is a designated Local Nature Reserve. [4]
